hello n welcome aboard !!
we don't support formating yet cause incomplete/tags like just <b> will make the user's and his/her follower's whole page bold.
media support/rendering is something we are thinking more about.
we don't have a character limit yet and kwippy aims to be more close to blogging than to communication..
more questions/doubts/suggestions ?

there was a incomplete < b > tag there and see what it did :)

Is there a way to implement markdown or some other friendly formatting markup other than HTML?

Also, if want to be more close to blogging than communication then I think you should seriously consider basic media embedding. Pictures at least.
